Pigmented smooth leather is used in approximately 90% of all leather upholstery. It is robust, easy to care for and uncomplicated.
Pigmented leathers are coated with an additional colour pigment layer after the tanning and dyeing process. The pores, the individual skin appearance as well as scars and other individual characteristics of the cow skin completely disappear under this layer of colour.
The thickness of this colour coating mainly depends on how badly damaged (branding marks, injury scars, insect bites, etc.) are visible, because this damage is to be concealed. With some pigmented leathers, the colour layer even conceals the natural hide structure, and the leather is therefore embossed with an artificial natural grain in order to imitate the hide structure.
The leather can also be artificially embossed for fashion reasons, for example to imitate crocodile or ostrich skin.
Heavily pigmented smooth leathers have a slightly stiffer, moderately warm feel due to the coloured top layer applied. They can therefore be slightly cool on cold days, because body heat cannot penetrate. On hot summer days, on the other hand, you will tend to perspire, and the leather feels sweaty.
But this surface treatment also offers a high protection against stains, because liquids can not penetrate deep into the leather. Therefore, pigmented smooth leathers are robust, easy to care for and uncomplicated.
Due to the high durability, this type of leather is "very suitable for everyday use" and less likely to fade. It is very easy to clean, and practically any stain can be removed ideally with the appropriate KERALUX® cleaners.
